N.H. Barnes has spent years reading history, and along the way developed a particular interest in women who mattered a great deal in their own time and were given very little space in the record afterward — a footnote where there might have been a chapter. That interest turned into research, and eventually into writing: an attempt to put a few of those women back at the center of their own stories.

The novels are grounded in real history — real courts, real politics, real consequences — but written as fiction first: an attempt at what it might have felt like to carry that kind of responsibility, in a world that rarely bothered to write it down.
